Spark NZ Wholesale View online

Hi there,

Welcome to the Spark Wholesale e-newsletter

This month we have an update on the Tasman Global Access (TGA) cable, a video showcasing how Vector moved on to Spark's Cat-M1 IoT network, an update on the RCG (Rural Connectivity Group) who have just connected their 200th site and a link to an interesting IoT webinar by Adroit.

Our e-newsletter is one way we'll provide better visibility on wholesale products, projects we're supporting, relevant industry updates and more. We'll keep it informative and interesting, but if you'd prefer to unsubscribe you can do so at the foot of this email.

Demand for digital services continues to soar

A new access point for the Tasman Global Access (TGA) fibre optic network marks the first direct connection between Sydney and Hamilton, offering additional resilience to New Zealand’s already strong telco infrastructure and increasing the amount of capacity available to be used on the cable.

The TGA forms part of the mission-critical backbone of the internet, linking New Zealand with Australia. The cable also serves as an important digital link to Asia via the five major international cable systems currently connecting Australia.

Prior to this upgrade, the original TGA network included the trans-Tasman submarine cable and existing optic networks which connected PoPs (points of presence) in Sydney and Auckland only.

Mark Beder, Spark Technology Director said: “Demand for digital services in New Zealand is growing exponentially every year and expanding capacity through the TGA cable (alongside our other submarine cable capacity investments in Southern Cross and the SX Next cable), will ensure internet service providers can continue to deliver excellent connectivity for customers.

To date, we have expanded capacity on the TGA cable to 2.4 Tbps of data usage, which is equivalent to at least 100,000 simultaneous 4K video streams. This is less than 10% of what the cable is capable of, meaning we can continue to invest in additional capacity upgrades to support Kiwi’s ever increasing appetite for digital services.”

The new TGA access point also means businesses in the Hamilton area no longer need to use Auckland as a PoP and can now connect internationally via Hamilton to Sydney and beyond.

RCG connect 200th site

Over the past year, Spark Wholesale has supported our customer the RCG (Rural Connectiviety Group) with the rollout of 4G cell sites across rural New Zealand. On 21 February 2021, the RCG launched their 200th live site in the sunny Hawkes Bay and Spark Wholesale was very proud to provide connectivity from the remote Seafield Road site into Spark's mobile network using a microwave (DMR) solution.

The new RCG sites are the result of an industry leading collaboration between New Zealand's three mobile network operators and Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

As you can imagine, to meet its objectives the RCG is constructing cell towers in some very challenging and remote locations.  Spark Wholesale provides a microwave backhaul solution in conjunction with Connect 8 between the remote RCG cell site and Spark's own cell site. The RCG traffic is routed to a Point of Interconnect allowing hand-off of other MNO’s traffic to their network.

Over 500 cell sites are planned across rural New Zealand as part of the Rural Broadband Initiative phase 2 or funded through the New Zealand Government's Provincial Growth Fund, delivering essential broadband and mobile services to rural customers.

Spark IoT webinar series

Our friends at Spark IoT hold a series of webinars with topics ranging from water management to the way we teach and learn.

This month, Ulrich Frerk (founder and technical director of Adroit) discussed using IoT to enhance business operations, with examples from aquaculture, farming and city planning to show what can be achieved with the right sensors, in the right places.

Towards the end of the webinar, Michele Wong (Spark IoT) mentions the Spark Innovation Studio. Located in the Spark City office, this co-creation space will help support New Zealand businesses to identify how emerging technologies like the Internet of Things and 5G can help them adapt, transform and grow. If you are interested in a tour of the studio, please get in touch with your Spark Wholesale Business Manager - spaces are very limited and in high demand.
